Building Blocks at the Grammar Level: Imitate the greats!

Hello! Anyone ready for an easy imitatio from Ben Hur, A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace? Who will accept the challenge? This section is extracted out of a chapter beginning. If the whole section is a bit daunting, focus on imitating only the last portion of the reading. Fun settings to consider describing range from an antique mall, a favorite botanical garden, Whole Foods Market , ebay, or grandma's attic. Note and imitate the alliterative description, "melon or a man".

What's happening with accreditation?

Since last spring, our school has been working toward accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Though our efforts may go unnoticed, still the process moves forward. We are busy adjusting to SACS standards, ensuring quality, and constantly looking for ways to improve. These three ideals: standards, quality, and improvement, form the core of the accreditation process.

Imitation: A Building Block of a Grammar Education

What better way to develop strong young writers but by having them carefully imitate the writing style of great authors from the past? Imitatio was a method employed from the Ancient World onward with young Greek and Roman children copying essays from the great Isocrates or Demosthenes.

Happy 400th Birthday, Don Quixote!

The idealistic, hapless Spanish knight lives on in the hearts and minds of readers generations after his conception. Critics often hail the story as "the novel of Europe".
This year boasts commemorative tours to Spain, special edition books, musical, art and dramatic programs to celebrate the quixotic knight's birthday.
Several such exhibits and displays grabbed our attention here in the Metroplex.

Mars Hill Audio and Ken Myers

We heard Ken Myers speak Friday evening at the Covenant Classical School Fall lecture series in Ft. Worth. In case you are not familiar with Mr. Myers and Mars Hill Audio, it's the best way I can think of to stay up to date with pertinent issues while in the car. Structured in interview format, subscribers receive a bi-monthly CD journal containing 90 minutes of interviews from a wide palate of interests. A veritable cornucopia of delight! We would have to subscribe to 6 or 7 magazines of differing ilks to possible get the broad smorgasbord Mars Hill Audio provides.

John J. Dwyer, Author and CDA History Chair Publishes Magisterial Account of The War Between the States

"John Dwyer's War Between the States continues his tradition of historical works that read like narrative backed by scholarship. He exhibits the courage to challenge long held biases on both sides of the divide with unvarnished facts. Add to this logos the beautiful arrangement of the work and the era paintings that make it a work of art worth browsing, and readers of many proclivities will find it worthwhile. I recommend it to anyone that desires to know the truth but wants to enjoy its pursuit, and I recommend it to my colleagues in classical Christian education as a text for studying America's uncivil war." - Rodney J. Marshall, President and Headmaster, Coram Deo Academy

Surveys on the Way

Over the coming weeks, our school will roll out a series of opinion surveys to measure your satisfaction with Coram Deo Academy. All our vital communities will be polled, starting October 11th with the Flower Mound upper school faculty and staff. Eventually, all faculty, staff, upper school students, and parents will have a chance to participate in the surveys. For convenience, all surveys will be web-based and tailored to the concerns of each CDA community. Though the investment of your time will be minimal (about 20 minutes), the returns will be manifold as we use your responses to improve teaching and learning at our school. We are excited to hear what you think!
